Being a “Syrian Hero” in China

The spirit of sacrifice is an essential part of Chinese culture, deeply rooted in Chinese culture as a spirit that deserves respect and reverence. I came to China to study in 2008 and have lived in China for more than ten years. Generally speaking, foreigners interested in Chinese culture and language, respect local customs and traditions, and make positive contributions to science and technology, education, cultural exchange, or business are usually admired and respected by the Chinese people. In addition, China’s “hero” concept may differ from other countries. In Chinese culture, heroes are usually the incarnation of the virtues such as loyalty, courage, and self-sacrifice, especially those who dedicate themselves to the overall situation of society.

“Syrian Hero” is how my neighbors greeted me the morning after the incident.

That happened on January 4, 2018, in a lake in Chongqing, southwest China. It was a cold winter night there. In a deep sleep at less than 2:00 a.m., I suddenly heard two horrible screams coming from the direction of the lake. Without letting fear control my reaction, I immediately jumped out of my warm bed and ran towards the helpless screams.

I followed the sound and stood on a terrace overlooking the dark lake. There was no one but me, and the object moved slowly through the lake’s center. The frequent screams made me hesitate.

I was alone, trying to understand what had happened. Was it a murder? What if the killer was still around? Was it a suicide attempt? I couldn’t even be sure if it was one person or not. Should I call the police? But time is running out, and every minute counts. Should I call for help? No one would hear me.

The chill of the night made it difficult for me to think correctly. I went down the moss-covered path that led to the lake. My heart beat faster as I stood alone by the lake, thousands of thoughts buzzing in my head like bees. I heard a faint cry for help echoing across the calm water.

As I ran to the lake, I could see it was a person, but I couldn’t discern much more as the small waves kept pushing the body. I never doubted whether or not to offer help, but the surroundings confused me: Would it be wise to jump straight into the lake to save him or her? For a moment, I thought about my soon-to-be child. I would become a father in four months. What if something went wrong when I tried to rescue this drowning person alone? But in the end, I told myself, “I must save the person. Even if bad luck strikes, my soon-to-be child will be proud of me.” The situation was worse than I initially thought. An older woman was drowning in the lake, on the verge of death. There seemed to be no one else nearby for hundreds of meters. It was as if fate had given me a chance to make a difference to someone. Despite my mediocre swimming skills, I removed my jacket and jumped into the water to save her.

The air and water were so cold to chill me to the bone, and the water plants in the lake were even more disturbing. I could feel my muscles screaming in agony as I swam through the cold, dark water. My body trembled, my teeth chattering, but I didn’t give up. As I got closer, the faint cries for help became more straight forward and transparent. I continued to move forward, but the image I saw surprised me: an older woman in the freezing lake struggling to surface. The night’s temperature was close to zero degrees Celsius, and the water was even icy. I saw her gazing at me, full of fear and hope, begging me to save her. Despite the dangers, as I am not an excellent swimmer, my poor Chinese was not good enough to communicate, and the older woman was unable to speak, I knew I had to save her as soon as possible.

“I knew I had to stay strong. No matter how hard it was, I had to keep swimming, keep going, and fighting to save her and myself.” After an agonizing ordeal, I pulled her out. Fortunately, she survived and was soon taken to the hospital. I never saw her again, but I know I did something good, something I was supposed to do. It wasn’t an easy task, but I’m glad I made a quick decision at the right time to save a life. Absolutely, over the years, I have always been on the receiving end of help from kind Chinese people in many aspects of my daily life.

It is an empowering feeling that I will never forget. Looking back on this incident makes me urge everyone to take basic survival skills training because it can save a life at a critical time! Do not hesitate to use the skills that you have learned to help someone in need. Even preliminary first aid skills can save a life in a critical situation.

Heroes don’t always wear capes or have superpowers. I’m proud of what I’ve done. Sometimes heroes are just regular people willing to take risks and help others.

Undoubtedly, my behavior that night significantly impacted that older woman’s life. But what about the broader impact of such behavior on society? It took me over five years to have the courage to share this story. I think I just did the right thing, which everyone can do.

By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others, make a positive impact in my own life and the lives of others, and inspire others to be brave, generous, and compassionate. Sharing our stories can be a powerful way to change ourselves and our world positively. A simple act of kindness can change a life forever and improve the world.
